How make Google Maps REPEAT the last spoken turn direction?

Apple Maps repeats the last spoken turn direction simply by
pressing the top of the screen (where the turn arrow is).

One single press, and the last spoken directions are repeated,
and updated if you've moved since the last time they were
spoken.

Garmin portable GPS units do the same repetition by pressing
a single button, which is the same as Apple Maps, which is
the turn arrow.

But, Google maps won't repeat the spoken directions in a
single button press that I can find.

This is so basic a need, that I'm sure it's there. Somewhere.
But where?

How do you get Google Maps to repeat the last spoken directions?

I'm about 80% sure that you could tap the bar at the top, but that that
disappeared now that you can preview future turns (a critically useful
feature)

But I don't see an obvious way to get it to repeat at this point.

There wouldn't be much point in my experience, quite a lot of the time
google maps speaks the instructions too late to be useful (e.g. telling
me to leave the roundabout after I already have) so a repeat would
definitely be too late.

I've tried, for weeks. And failed.

On Apple Maps, you just tap the menu-directions bar at the top.
On Garmin Nuvi, you just tap the next-turn indicator in the corner.
On Google Maps, you just can't do it (as far as I can tell).

While I love Google Maps, it's incomprehensible that such a
fantastically useful feature while driving, is wholly missing.

If people are trying to drive cars while doing this, riding a bike just
got even scarier.

I've got Sygic and it has parameters that control the frequency/distance
of turn announcements. I think I've got it turned up to max because I
get 3-4 announcements for every turn - each one as I get closer.

Truth be told, it's starting to get on my nerves.... but the ability to
control it is there.

And, why it's a BASIC FEATURE of any decent map program!

Let's say the next turn is 120 miles away.
When I start the map program, it speaks the next turn at startup.
But then it's silent. For a very long time.

Let's say I've driven for 45 minutes, and now I want to know that
next turn again. I just tap on the top bar of Apple Maps, and it
repeats with updated directions: "turn left onto main street in
ten miles" (or whatever).

A few minutes later, if I get confused by all the traffic and signs,
I just tap again, and it says "turn left onto main street in three
miles" (or whatever).

Repeating that last spoken direction is paramount in importance
when driving. Since Google Maps is so wonderful in so many ways,
I'm surprised that only Apple and Garmin have figured this one out.

I was so sure it must be there, that I asked here, to see if it
was just me, or if there was a way to make Google repeat directions.

The only way I know how is to turn off the maps, and then turn
them back on, and then re-route, and THEN it will speak the
updated next-turn direction.

But that's a whole bunch of button clicks for something which should
be a single tap (as it is with Apple Maps & Garmin Nuvis).

Not just Apple and Garmin. Just about everyone else, except (according
to your experience) Google. For example, it works pretty much the same
with the built-in GPS navigation system in my Prius. I just press the
Map button on the steering wheel, and it repeats the previous spoken
instruction, updated for the current position of the car.

play it again even later, help?

I used to try to use gmaps in audio only, without looking at the screen,
I'd be approaching a roundabout, it would say "in xxx yards at the
roundabout" at this point I'm already wondering which lane I ought to be
in "take the nth exit" by which point it's not rare for me to be at or
past the nth exit.

You must do very different types of journey to me, if I'm on a motorway,
I'll generally know my exit number in advance, otherwise it would be
rare to go more than 5-10 miles without a roundabout, slight fork etc.

One feature that google maps used to have, but seems not to now, was
that after such a long gap in instructions, it would give a chime to
tell you it was about to re-commence instructions.

I'd certainly appreciate the ability to repeat directions. I can imagine
reasons for wanting to do so. For instance, perhaps you might not be
able to hear the initial instruction due to road/environmental noise. If
we just use our imaginations, I'm sure we can think of others as well.

And honestly, I'm having a hard time why anyone would argue that such a
feature isn't desirable. It's not like if the feature existed you would
somehow be forced to use it. Don't use it if you don't want to. Seems
pretty simple to me.

There are gas stations in the UK although there are not many of them. They

There are, in fact, about 30 hydrogen filling stations in
Germany, being used by a fleet of test cars running on pure
hydrogen.

Unfortunately, these cars are still about twice as expensive as
traditional cars. Things can only get better.

That might have been a reference to the removal of signposts in WW-II in the
UK to frustrate invading Germans (or spies, perhaps). Though there is an
urban myth that the signs were also switched around to cause confusion.

But in the UK you would find it hard to identify 5 miles of road without a
junction or building that required an identifying sign (except perhaps on
rural motorways).

superfluous.

Then navigation devices can be made obligatory and made to
contain also the traffic sign information. Look ma, no traffic
signs any more. That would save a lot of money.

No, it won't happen, because the bureaucracy living off of signs
will fight tooth and nail against such proposals. They will, of
course, argue that there is a grandmother somewhere in Alabama
who has no phone and could therefore not drive without traffic
signs.

Where I live we have road-signs. I can get where I'm going without
electronic assistance.

I won't forget the time I had to drive a few miles west from the motel
to the intersection where I was to turn south. Pretty simple, obviously
no GPS needed. But I missed it...

The intersection, in the eastern Oregon near-desert (nowhere near where
I live), was very understated, and in addition, we never saw the signs
(if there even were any). I had only overshot by maybe 10 miles when I
pulled over to look at the paper map.

Had I used my GPS, Jill would have said "Turn left in 200 yards"...

Strangely enough, most map programs which speak the next
turn, don't actually SHOW that next turn if it's a few
miles distant.

They simply show the road you are on.

So, if you missed the next spoken turn (for whatever reason),
or, if you just plain forgot what it is, there's no way in
Google Maps short of stopping and restarting the program, to
get it to re-speak the last spoken direction.

The closest I can get to getting Google Maps to re-speak directions
is to shut off and then turn back on the route.

There must be an easier way ...

Garmin shows the next turn in words at the top of the display, so you
can glance at that and be very aware of what to look for.

In addition, Garmin shows how many miles to the next turn, so you know
exactly at any time how many miles it is to the point where you have to
make a decision and act.

If phone maps don't do anything this simple, they're useless.

Google Navigation does this also.

You can even swipe to the next turns, if you want to look
farther ahead. As you swipe, the map jumps to that turn.

Finally you tap the "Resume" button to get back to the normal
navigation display that shows the road you are on.

Same here. I don't need additional distractions while droving. I can stop
and look at the whole map if I need to.

Just checked my old Garmin C340 for repeat-directions. I find that I get a response when I touch the top of the screen; but it's visual only; it lists the next two or three turns. This may be an equal alternative. Thee advantage is that instead of a fleeting notice, it lingers long enough to read OK....

Thanks for explaining how these work. i've been using Navigon for a long time, years, very happy with it, but it's old fashioned and newer apps make entering addresses easier, and i liked Google maps for that reason, and the nice loud voice, i thought, "this is a good app for me," which i was unable to try out previously because i had delayed updating from iOS 5 and iOS was up to 7 and i was not able to update. So, i got the iPhone 6 and eagerly got google maps. When i couldn't find the way to repeat the last direction, i thought i was just missing it and didn't know how to do it. A web search showed that it simply doesn't have this function. To me, this is unbelievable. In the kind of traffic i drive in (in LA) it's just not safe to have to take your eyes off the road to read the info on iPhone display in inopportune moments. Sometimes it's safe, but when i need to know where to get off and which way to turn and i'm in the middle of a lot of traffic, it's often really not safe to try to pull up and read that info on my iPhone. Like all the other GPS's i've used on phones, going back to Verizon VZ Navigator in 2006, an excellent app as far as information provided and ease of accessing it, i simply expected that any GPS app would include this option. I'm very disappointed. It's such an easy to use app in so many ways, but it's an unsafe app. I'll stick with Navigon and use apple Maps as a back up. i hope Google Maps will discover that repeating the last voice direction makes for a safer drive, at least for people who drive in heavy traffic and have things on their mind so that they may have not heard the direction. To me this is a no brainer.

was looking for same solution and just found it...it is a bit of a work around but works well. input your destination, hit the blue circle with the car in it at the bottom right then hit start navigation and you are on your way.Now here comes the secret sauce.... on the bottom left hit the x next to the minutes number. The map will change and a blue circle with an arrow will appear in the lower right. Tap the circle and Voila the instructions are repeated and you are back in business! So basically you need to hit 2 buttons to repeat the directions on google maps on iPhone....not too shabby!

By the way, a long-tap on the blue circle starts navigation
right away.

According to the web-page I posted below, f you have Google listening to you (by saying "Hey Google" you can get some navigation tips as well.

Try saying...

“Okay, Google” and then try variations on these examples:

“What road is this?”
“What’s my next turn?”
“What’s my ETA?”
“How’s traffic ahead?”
“How’s traffic to work?”
“Avoid tolls”
“Avoid highways”
“Find gas stations”
“Find restaurants”
“Navigate home”
“Take me to McDonald’s”
“What’s the closest hotel?”
“Exit navigation”

The only thing thing I have figured out requires 2 button presses:

EXIT and then START

Ridiculous but it works.

OK GOOGLE, come on - fix this! One tap should repeat last instruction!

Hey Google. Try your stuff out on real humans!!!! Sometimes we are talking and miss the first part of the instruction...or just day dreaming or dealing with bad traffic.
