Simple gps reciever

Any suggestions for a dirt simple, battery powered, gps reciever that showed
lattitude & longitude in deg.min.sec or deg.decimal_fraction and altitude in
feet or meters. All three being nullable would be a bonus. So would NEMA
string output capability. The ability to store current readings for later use
would be handy but not required.
Any maping capability wouldn't be used and would probably add bothersome
complications and probably extra cost.

Have you tried smart phone aps? I find several android aps that seem
to do moat of what you want.

Garmin Etrex 10 is pretty simple and cheap. It will give you
latitude/longitude (in various formats), plus altitude. Not sure what
you mean by nullable?
You can mark a waypoint, if you want to store the coordinates for later.

Not sure about NMEA output. As standard, when you plug it into a PC, it
just works as a USB mass storage device. For some USB Garmins, you can
set it to "spanner mode", then use Garmin Spanner or GpsGate software to
convert this into a virtual serial port, in NMEA format. Don't know if
this works with the Etrex 10.

Craig - I got an Etrex 10 and it is stuck in the menu mode. The manual
tells how to get into the menu & how move from entry to entry but neglects
to say how to leave. Do you have any idea?
The objective at this point is to display the position & elevation.
From there I'll play with storing positions for later recall, but that
seems to be covered from the menu.

Have you tried removing the batteries for a minute or so and then
re-inserting them?

Good idea. I'll keep that as a second to last resort if no direct solution
appears. I suspect, hopefully, that Garmin has hidden a clue somewhere in
their mysterious documentation and someone here has found it.

Google up the manual on line. They don't usually supply these with the
units. My older Etrex you just push button on side to shift between
menu and satellite screens.

Indeed they do. On an eTrex 10/20/30, just connect it to a computer,
open the Documents folder, and double-click the "START_HERE" file.
That will open a page in your web browser that offers Quick Start
and Owner's manuals in about a dozen languages. Or open the "pdf"
folder within the Documents folder and find "OM_EN.pdf." That's
the English-language 10/20/30 owner's manual.

Interesting. I've never connected mine and do not recall them supplying
a cable although others I have will probably fit.
I do upgrade the lifetime maps on wife's and my Nuvi units but have
never looked at the files in either device.

That is how it works as standard. It goes to the main menu, then you can
select options from there. If you want to see your position and
elevation, you can pick the "Trip computer" option.
You can customise the trip computer page to display different data
fields, so you can set it to show latitude/longitude and elevation if
they are not shown as default.

You can also set up the "page sequence", so you can just press the back
button to change between pages (similar to how older Etrex models work).
That may be more convenient, if there's a few pages you use regularly.

Thanks Craig. I'll give the trip computer a try & take a look at the guide
you mentioned.

Craig et al - many thanks to all of you who had suggestions. One of the
online documents pointed to the satellite page which shows the position in
usable form.
