I'm thinking about getting one of these but there are several styles on
the market from Garmin-- beanbag, friction, Gump and a variety of third
party aftermarket ones.

Any recommendations-- what do you like/not like about one you've used?

I have two of these Garmin friction mounts. They have what seem to be heavy
little beads in each of the four flexible corners. The stick thing with the
ball on it rotates at the base to any horizontal angle. I have no
complaints; it's heavy and it works for me.

That's precisely the item I was describing in my post, but I referred to it
as a beanbag. Sorry for the confusion.

I got mine like that at a yard sale. I'd like it a lot better if my
dashboard weren't slanted downward :-( I wouldn't pay the new price for
it, of course, but a buck was OK.

In the old days when I still used a Nuvi, I used a beanbag and liked it
because it stayed in place, it was easy to move from vehicle to vehicle, it
placed the GPS on the dash just where I wanted it, and best of all, it
didn't rely on suction or sticking anything to the windshield.

Since then, I've seen recommendations for a vent clip system, but the vents
in my vehicles are plastic and I don't want to hang a GPS from them. It's
moot now because long ago Nuvi was retired in favor of a smartphone.

It's hard enough to read the 7" Nuvi; using a smartphone for car GPS is
out of the question.

If it has the same kind of non-skid bottom as those little sheets of
sort-of-sticky plastic stuff it will eventually accumulate
dust/dirt/whatever and become insufficiently sticky. Soap and water
solves the problem nicely!

I very rarely look at the display while driving, and in fact it's frequently
not even viewable if I wanted to. Instead, I let it speak to me, which so
far has worked wonderfully. I enter my destination by speaking, then I put
it down somewhere and it tells me where to turn.

I travel every week for work, so for me the pros are that it works much
better than my Nuvi, it's always updated without any help from me, and it's
a device that I already have with me anyway, so I don't have to pack
anything additional. I can't think of any cons at the moment.

I gave up on the nuvi mounts.
They always broke.

The mount is the weak point in the Garmin ecosystem for sure.

The larger screen of an iPad kills that of the nuvi anyway.
And the louder speaker of an in-car bluetooth speaker kills the nuvi.

Now it just gathers dust in my glovebox (and I paid almost $1,000 for it,
as it has the European and USA maps). It's the 770 or 760 as I recall.

Do you take it down each time you park and/or leave the car?

I don't know a single person who leaves it on the windshield, and, of
all those people (plenty, including myself), all (to a person) has had
the mount break, over time.

Every single one.

I agree the iPad is hard to mount as it's huge, compared to the nuvi.
Mine has a case that goes triangular, so, I mount it by putting it
in front of the shift lever on my automatic. Sometimes I just leave it
on the passenger seat (and mostly let it talk me to my destination).

Once in a while, I put it on the dash, but only on the slow and level,
as it slides way more than it would were it to be a beanbag.

NOTE: My StreetPilot III beanbag mount worked just fine; it's just
the nuvi mounts that kept breaking.

Garmin changed things over time. For the StreetPilot III, we had to buy
exorbitant memory cards; for the nuvi's, we didn't; but, even the nuvi
(which had wonderful maps and directions) doesn't navigate as well as
Google Maps does online.

I'd say the nuvi is about as good as Alk Copilot is, which works offline
(which is a necessity on the road because you won't always have cellular).

Garmin used to charge for the navigation too, although I don't know if
they still do as I never paid for it. I don't see how Garmin can stay
in business as I'd still be using the nuvi if the mounts didn't always
break.

Of all the people I know who had/have Nuvi's, including myself, several
family members, and a slew of friends, coworkers, and acquaintances, I don't
recall a single incident of a Nuvi mount breaking. I guess my experience is
100% the opposite of yours, which seems strange.

I stopped using my Nuvi 760 a little over two years ago when I got a decent
smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S3 with Google Maps, which works SO much better
than a Nuvi), and since then my Nuvi and its beanbag mount have led a rough
life. Tossed around to various places in the car for the first 8 months or
so, it ended up on the floor of the rear seat, where passengers would step
on it, shove it out of the way with their feet, and kick it up under the
seat. After that, I moved the Nuvi into the house and onto a shelf, but the
mount ended up in the garage where it spent time on the workbench, being
shoved around and falling to the garage floor multiple times. It seems to be
virtually indestructible. On a motorcycle forum that I keep up with, a lot
of people use a similar mount to put a Nuvi on their motorcycles, even the
paint shaker Harleys. I haven't seen any reports of broken mounts there, as
well.

I'll take Google Maps over the Nuvi every day of the week, hands down.

My extended family apparently feels the same way. I put the word out
sometime last year that any of them could have it, but there were no takers.
The Nuvi still works as good as it ever did, but it can't hold a candle to
Google Maps, which is faster, more accurate, constantly updated, contained
within a device which I always have with me, and does voice for both input
and output.

Some of the top of the line nuvi models do have an undocumented people

include Bull, Horse, or Ape, etc., in your query.

I used a beanbag and liked it because it stayed in place, it was easy to
move from vehicle to vehicle, it placed the GPS on the dash just where I
wanted it, and best of all, it didn't rely on suction or sticking
anything to the windshield.
I had one for my old TomTom, though they are a bit heavy/bulky to
pack in flight bags when renting a car.
Might try a NavMat for that use.
Since then, I've seen recommendations for a vent clip system
For own car use, I have a Brodit 'surclip' that sits firmly in the air
vent by the steering wheel; no damage of any kind in 8 years.

The Brodit is a 2-part system comprising:

(1) The surclip for a particular car make
(2) An adapter appropriate to the satnav. It fixes onto the surclip,
and - like the TomTom adaptor - easy to swivel.

So when I recently changed to a Garmin, I got the latter (from
Amazon) for the Garmin and just replaced the TomTom adaptor with it,
using the Garmin's rear clip to mount/unmount the satnav.

I'm thinking about getting one of these but there are several styles on
the market from Garmin-- beanbag, friction, Gump and a variety of third
party aftermarket ones.
Any recommendations-- what do you like/not like about one you've used?
I've used the Garmin beanbag mount for many many years without any
trouble.

I like the beanbag. You can reach and pull the GPS to you to set your
route... It will fly around if you perform a high speed evasive maneuver but
it is during braking and lets loose toward the windshield.

I do not like the friction as dust gets on the dashboard and it slides.

Yes, and if you get your dashboard polished with something Son of a Gun, it will
slide everywhere.
