While I was recently out of the country at the beginning of November, Comcast [Infinity] closed down it's non-business users' web hosting service where my Garmin GPS - Tricks, Tips, Work Arounds, Hints, Secrets and Ideas web site that has been in operation since 2007 was housed.

Several have written to me about not being able to access the popular site and wondered if it has been closed.

I am pleased to announce that I have been able to re-locate the 'Garmin Tricks & Tips' site in a temporary location while searching for a permanent web housing home.

You can reach it at:

http://tinyurl.com/GARMIN-TNT http://tinyurl.com/GARMIN-TNT

or

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17659207/GARMIN.TnT/index.html

While most of the scores of article tips were written in the time period of older nuvis, many general Garmin nuvi GPS users report that a majority of the help articles still apply to newer Garmin devises.

I intend to keep the site alive as an archive of helpful nuvi articles.

Take a peek if you are new or haven't visited in a while.

Thanks for doing it. Garmin should give your web site (and pay you)
to new owners. Would be good if you can set up an auto post so it is
here once a month or so as people would search. Activity here has
slowed over time though. Could be that so many cars now have built in
NAV that there are less aftermarket? My car has a 9 1/2" screen,
nicer than a little portable and way nicer than trying to use a phone.

and from me too. It's a wonderful source of information.

Sometimes a little difficult to find a tip you know you read there before -
but there is always another tip you missed on the way back to it :)

I got stiffed by Comcast too.

Services go down and prices go up.

I went over to Go Daddy which worked well but they keep pestering for
more work.

One of these days, Mrs. Frank will get just as pissed off and switch to
FIOS. Don't know if they offer free hosting but I'd save maybe $1,000
for a package for 4 years.

I was just looking for a place with nuvi information.

I have one but the USB cables I have switch the unit into
"computer" mode. I just want to plug it into a cigarette lighter
adapter or auto USB socket, and have it run & charge.

Any suggestions where to look?

There are a lot of Garmin users on the Geocaching.com forums.

David, have you tried the cigarette lighter approach? I think it
might actually offer what you are looking for. In my experience,
the way a device behaves is based on the nature of the USB port
it's plugged into.

For example, if I plug my iPhone/cable into the available USB
socket in my car, the audio system in the car querries the phone
and starts playing the first song on it. I hate this behavior, so
I got an adaptor that goes into the cigarette lighter. There's no
pathway for data, so the car doesn't know the phone is there.

Well, that last bit's not *completely* true, because the car knows
the phone is there via bluetooth (it tries to take over the
playing of anything the phone is alreadyy playing), but it
doeesn't start anything or change what the phone is doing.

I also came across this guide to making a USB cable that carries
power only:

http://www.instructables.com/id/USB-Condom/

I haven't tried it, so can't say how easy it is to do or how well
it might work.

Yes, I was in a borrowed car, with a USB cable. The GPS battery
was dying, I was late and I was unsure where I was going.

The vehicle has both USB & lighter ports. I had a 12->5v
adapter. Neither would work.

Certainly not here.
This place seems to be for course books and solution manuals. Ha!

Not manuals. A single manual. I suspect this a code for some other
kind of activity. There can't be that many people posting here looking
for the same manual.

If you have the cigarette lighter, why bother with USB
charging, which is really slow.

I am not sure what you mean by "computer mode". The
GPS unit will receive power, but what reads the data?
And, does that stop the GPS from working.

Many years ago, I had the opposite problem: my
nuvi 65LMT was not 'readable' from my computer, i.e.
I could not use Basecamp. Basecamp is something that
I depend on for a lot of stuff. What followed was a
comic episode with Garmin replacing my device with new
devices TWICE over. Still had the same problem with the
third. Finally, Garmin forums solved the issue. The units
can get into an MTP (Motor Transport Protocol?) that
makes them not mount as external drives. The cure is as
follows:
Your nuvi defaults to mtp mode which is why it shows as a device. You
can set it to mass storage mode, but then you are at risk of bricking
it if you do something you shouldn't, hence the move to mtp mode on
the latest nuvis. If you are happy to take the risk:

1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
3. The Developers Screen will pop up
4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip
information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the
speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen.

<<

However, I doubt this is your issue as you seen NOT to want
to be in the data storage device mode.

What the nuvis (and a lot of other equipment) do depends on a resistor
in the mini-USB connector on the cable. That resistor value "programs"
the connected hardware. Google *may* be your friend, I don't have the
time now to hunt for the link I saved.
