My Nuvi spends the majority of it's life in the dash compartment. It
come out every few months when I need it for a in state short trip. It
acted like the battery was on it's last leg when unplugged from the
cigar lighter. Afte about one minute unplugged, it was dead. I plugged
it into my computer to charge it up. I charged it for about 8 hours in
the Nuvi in the off condition. Works great now for over 10 minutes
unplugged. I don't know what the time limit is as I have not yet had
it happen.

Any rechargeable battery will deteriorate with time. They don't hold
the charge as long. Best to charge them once in a while even if you are
not using it.

Which nuvi? My 65 LMT never had decent battery life from the very
start. After continual use in the car, plugged into the cigarette
lighter, it would barely last 15 min unplugged. So, 10 min does
not sound so bad.

And, I do not see a way of changing the battery in my unit. It
seems all pretty much sealed in.

On my Nuvi 760 the battery life deteriorated to the point where the
countdown on the "Power lost, shutting down in 30 seconds" message
never reached zero.

Certainly they don't *look* like the battery is replaceable, but on
mine it was (~$A15 off ebay, with tool) and I'd strongly suggest they
all are. I sugest a bit of searching on fleabay for "nuvi 65 battery"
will show you the resources, while youtube probably has a video on
"replace nuvi 65 battery".

Thanks. I found

(Interesting choice of background music!)

Looks like Garmin designed it to make 'service' difficult.
If I do hit big time battery problmes, I will give it a go.

I was never sure how long the battery will go when the
unit is unplugged (assuming full charge). I suppose it is
in a spec somewhere ... but have not seen it. It would be nice
to use the device when going around a new town on foot (i.e.
tourism related), but I found it impractical due to the short
battery life.

My Nüvi2595LMT has two different off-states:

when car power goes away, or when I press the power button shortly, it
goes into standby mode. From this mode it wakes up quickly, but it still
uses some battery power all the time. I guess that the battery is empty
after a month or so. Therefore this is no good for long time.

When I press the power button longer than one second, it goes into the
real off-mode. From this mode it wakes up slowly, looking like a real
boot process, with some messages.

I wonder if this is the same for all Nüvi models. As I remember, it was
not explains clearly in the manual.

You are describing "sleep" and "off" states- same as you find on a
laptop computer, smart phone, or tablet.

Yes indeed. The OP should check which one he speaks about.

This part, I see. But, the 65 LMT I have warns you that power is
lost when it is unplugged and gives you an option of NOT shutting it
off. Otherwise, it shuts down in 15 seconds. So, AFAIK, there is no
standby mode.

Hm - my Nüvi does the same: it comes with a countdown when unplugged,
saying that it will shut off after x seconds, with a cancel button.

When I do nothing, it goes off *but this is the standby mode, not the
real off mode*.

You can easily distinguish: from standby mode it will recover quickly.
Fron real off mode it takes long to recover.

Ah! I never thought of NOT turning it off! I will give it a try.

A somewhat unrelated question. Are you not the one behind
'Gartrip'. I used it for many years with my Map 76, till it broke.
I still have Gartrip on my Windows 7 machine, even though I
have not used it after I retired the XP box.

Time to replace the Map 76 as the auto
GPS are no good once off the road. As for Gartrip, it worked
like a charm!! Loved it.
