I use the two software. principaly mapsource will not be followed soon.
Basecamp is more about using the GPS. It manage waypoints generaly,
around all your collection. (that is a big problem for me). Personnaly i
use mapsource to do my routes, tracks, waypoints... and import all in
basecamp to put them on my gps, so it keep all informations (proximity
alarm and all).

Basecamp can manage geolocalized photos, can use birdeyes, that
mapsource cant.

I will say BC is more 'user friendly' and more easy to use.. but it can
be very difficult to use when you manage a lot of datas, or want to
manage differents versions of your data.

Example. I prepare routes, tracks and waypoint for my brother and an
english friend. I have done all form my brother, duplicated the list to
make an english version.

First attempt.. when i translate the comments of the waypoints it change
the french one too.. OK, since the WP is in the two lists. So i do it
again, this time deleting the french list before doing the translation..
but as i delete the list, it delete the WP in the list too..

In fine, i have done all in mapsource..;

I use both. I have a number of GPS devices, two of which have a 'home'
setting - one needs to be called HOME (ie all caps) and the other
needs to be called home (lower case). Basecamp can't handle that (only
one date file allowed & is case insensitive), whereas Mapsource can
(different files for each device)
Mapsource is well established & relatively bug free, and officially
obsolete. Basecamp is still being developed & needs a fair bit of
tweaking still before it's as good as Mapsource ... and also can't
install maps to your GPS, it needs to use the external Mapinstall.
