Help needed. More grief with Basecamp.

I used Basecamp successfully about a year ago and have to
use it again. But, when I plug the Nuvi to my computer, with
Basecamp running, all I see is the base map and I cannot
get the detail I used to get.

I updated my maps on the device and installed the latest
version of Basecamp to 4.4.6. Something strange is going
on. When the Nuvi is not connected to the computer, it
is in the 'navigate' mode and shows the street map. But.
as soon as I plug it to the USB post, the display changes
to the garmin.com/express splashsceen.The device
mounts (I can see the card in 'My Computer'), but
it does not show on Basecamp. I used to see the
'Internal Memory' and the extra SD card with the
European map. NOTHING now!

In effect, I cannot use Basecamp for anything as it does
not see the Nuvi.

Any ideas will be welcome.

Basecamp was always painful ... but this is worse :-(

I have checked cables and connections since the above
post. I now see (after re-installing Basecamp a few
times) something called 'gmapprom'. Nothing else.
And no detailed maps in Basecamp.

Yes, it's awful. Have you tried Mapsource? That's the Garmin
software that came before Basecamp (I think). Folks have posted
links here previously for downloading it, a search of the archives
should turn something up.

I have not even though I am familiar with the name. I heard about
it when I got a Garmin Map76 many years ago, but did not want to
pay the money. Instead, I went to Gartrip, which was more than
what I needed at that time (mainly a walking GPS as opposed to
driving specific routes).

I will try Mapsource.

However, some interesting things. I got so fed up with the reinstalls
that once I left the thing with the 'gmapprom' thing and walked away.
Came back to find all the maps on Basecamp! I could do all the things
that I did before. Then, I walked away again, and the computer went
to sleep! When I got it back to work, I was back to where I was again.
I have seen this behaviour with external harddrives that have a
password lock. They go belly up when to wake the computer. But,
with Basecamp it has gone stone dead now. I do not even get to see
'gmapprom'.

Another interesting observation is that when I deleted that entire
Garim directory in ProgramFilesx86), and plugged in the Garmin, the
USB link came up in a flash and I could browse through all the stuff
on the LMT. But, when I get Basecamp going, it bogs down. It
takes about 20 min to be able to get access to to the data in the
unit. That, together with the fact I often see the Windows tell be
that the USB device is broken, makes me suspect drivers. But, what
the hell ... it may just make sense to make the Garmin Garbage
and use a mobile phone. Not sure if these units make sense unless
one is in a place where one's phone cannot access the web.

BTW, I used to be in Bloomington back in 76 -- for a couple of years.
Guess it was a much smaller town then! Eigenmann Hall still looks
good on Google Maps :-)

[...snipped other points on odd experiences...]

Not sure I can comment on your other experience, but I also did
not see a question in them.

Somehow I doubt it's grown hugely, though I've only lived here
about 12 years.
