I now have two GPSs and I'd like to "synchronize" them to have the same destinations. I'm not sure how to do that; I'd like to do a file copy of one set of destinations from one GPS onto the set of destinations of the other GPS. How may I really achieve this merge?

Angelo-

If they are identical units, you may be able to connect them to your
computer via a USB cable, and copy the destinations file from one to
replace the file in the other.

If they are not identical, but are both from the same company, look for
a computer application from that company. For example, Garmin has
Garmin Express. When I got a new GPS, I was able to use Garmin Express
to transfer data from the old to the new.

Fred
Does transferring data from old to new replace the data or merge with
it? If replace, you are back to the same problem, with the data from
one in the other and the replaced data is lost.

That is a good point. I do not recall if individual locations can be
transferred. (I just found out Garmin Express won't run under this old
system I use for MT-NewsWatcher.)

I suggest you try it out and see if it will do what you want. I recall
it has the ability to save data from each GPS, and restore it if needed.
There is help available within the program.

There is a YouTube video on installing and using it, but I did not see
information about individual locations being transferred:

I found another place that suggests you can connect the GPS to your
computer and find the .GPX files that contain locations. It would be
interesting to see if those files can be edited.

Just download the free Basecamp from Garmin. Then you can copy from
the old GPS and it will be saved on your computer. Then save to the
new one. It will merge with your existing in the new one. If you
have one for instance named "Gas" already in the new one, it will add
"Gas1".

I've got waypoints from a way back Garmin GPS-III and Street Pilot
that upload to the latest.

Rather, you want Basecamp to really manage a database. True, you
can backup a device and then try to read that file into the other,
etc., but using Basecamp you can really manage your data.

Basecamp is a free download from Garmin.

For many years I used Gartrip.

http://www.gartrip.de/

with my old GPS Map76. Worked like a charm. I still have it on my
computer, but have not used it with my nuvi 65LMT as I began
to use Basecamp. I guess the main reason the loss of the serial
port that the Map76 used to interface with the computer.

Later:
I did indeed download the Saved places from both units separately as (car1) and (car2). On completing the car2 download, the Garmin software asked me whether I wanted to combine the car1 Saved places into with those of car 2. I clicked "yes", and the Garmin software nicely did that for me; precisely the result I wanted. Furthermore, I then re-connected car1 usb cable to the computer, and I was soon asked the question whether I wanted to combine car 2 data into car1 data, I clicked yes, and the deeds were complete. Kudos to Garmin!
