I do not have cause to use it often but last weekend I needed to drive
from Staffordshire to Brighton, I encountered 2 problems. First the
fastest route to Brighton seems obvious.M6 - M42 - M40 - M25 - A23,
indeed when I plan the route using MapSource that is exactly what it
does. However when driving the route with my Nuvi whenever I get onto a
motorway it wants me to leave at the next junction, I accept that this
may be the way I have set the machine up but how?
also when I came to return it took a very long time to work out the
route, so long that I set off before it has finished calculating, other
times it ha been fine.
Another question, it I may, how can I see the route before driving,
apart from the simulated journey, which I have not got the patience to
follow?

================================
See if this helps with it wanting you to get off the highway:
Settings/Navigation - Make sure "Route Preference is set to "Faster Time"
Note:If its set to the shortest route it may take you off the highway
because the back roads maybe shorter.
Settings/Navigation - Make sure Avoidances are "Enabled"
Settings/Navigation/Avoidances - Make sure "Highways" are un-checked.
Note: The check mark means that you want to avoid that item.
=================================
The long time for re-cal may have been that you shut the unit off and it had
to find the satellites after you moved a far distance. (just a guess)
=================================
To see your current route, tap the green bar on the top of the map page, then tap "Show Map" on the bottom of page. (you must be connected to the satellites, and on a route for this to work)
=================================

Hope this helps some,
Mike

This is often the cause/explanation. We had instances in the USA
where it would take us down a freeway off-ramp, then up the
"straight-ahead" on-ramp because it presumably decided that was a
metre or two shorter than staying on the freeway.

Thanks for the help. Mike you were correct, I had somehow set the thing
to avoid Motorways, Doh. Probably correct about the slow satellite

Can't answer thar off-motorway query, but I can say that after about 2 years with my last map update, I find that the "Fastest" choice often attempts to maximize the motorway driving as opposed to minimizing the time for a trip. That is, One finds themselves making that trip driving at the highest possible speeds even though it takes you on a more circuitous royte, just to maximize motorway driving... I vacillate between "Fastest" and "Shortest"... Often, the "Shortest" choice allows one to enjoy new "short cuts" while at the same time one can divert to a fast motorway here and there that you may already know of. The "recalculate" reaction is usually efficient to maintain nice progress.

I usually poke through the various segments looking for any problematic items...
