Ciao I'm from Italy, excuse me for my english...

I have a Garmin 2455LM
with City Navigator EU NTU 2014 maps

Now I have a Garmin GpsMap 64st
with recreational europe
and Trek (topo) Map Italy V3 (bought after)

I would like use the City Navigator maps
On 64st when I use it on my bike
(the 2455lm is on my car)

I know in past years this is possibile thus
Garmin let use two device with same licensed map

Is still possible? and how?

If not possible could you suggest me a
good "free" (Open Maps?) alternative
to use on 64st with a ruotable map
for use on my bike?

thanks a lot

ciao

Why not copy your GarminCity Navigator EU NTU 2014 map files to a SD card.
On the SD card first create a folder named Garmin and then copy the map
files into the Garmin Folder . Plug the SD card into your GpsMap 64st.
Under Map, Select SD map file and it should do what you want.

Maps are locked to one device.
The Garmin policy to allow unlocking for another device was changed years ago.

You can try OpenStreetMaps if they are rich enough in your region of Italy.

I have tried the "copy" solution but -as say by Philippe- do not work
cause the "lock"... Tried unlock with basecamp but not work.
All this I have tried before my original post.

So thank you Philippe you confirm me that Garmin have
changed the license policy.

In the past, as a precaution, I have backed up the files in the unit's
Garmin folder to my computer. When the Unit is connected to the computer
it is considered the same as another drive. From there it could be copied to
an SD card.
Are you saying that it is no longer possible to backup these files to
another device??

You can backup it in case your SD card is damaged however if you want to use it
with another Garmin device, it won't work as the map is locked to the device.

If you bought the map on SD card directly from Garmin then it is locked to the
SD card not to the device so you can use it on another device however you can't
usually load it on Mapsource or Basecamp.

I understand what you're saying. However, What I've seen that worked was
to ---Copy the Unit's (1) files (from the Garmin folder) to the computer.
From the computer copy to a Garmin folder on an SD card. Install the SD
card into a different Unit (2) and the Map (from Unit 1), when selected, was
correctly displayed and functioned normally. Is this what you say won't
work? Perhaps it did because both Units were relatively old (by today's
standards)?

Maybe rather because the map in question is not locked.

Two things---you are correct, the map was unlocked. Also, forgot to
mention--when you put the map file on the SD card it has to be renamed in
order for it to work. Can give you the before and after if you're
interested.

Time was you could find unlocked torrent maps for Garmin, and you
probably still can that will work for older units, I updated my old Nuvi
1240 and Nuvi 255 units this way to 2017 maps, they work great and I use
the 1240 as my main unit still now, in preference to a modern Garmin
57LM unit that cant pronounce road names for shit and made me swear at
it constantly! -
The Garmin price of maps is out of the question for old satnav units.
But I think Garmin changed the map locking system at some point in the
last couple of years ( I dont know when - someone else might know) and
the newer Garmin units will not work with those torrent unlocked maps as
far as I am aware. C+

Probably from someone trawling around on Google Groups, and not
realizing they are long ago expired from anyone's news spool.

Yep agreed - I think probably Google is the reason, Ive' never used
G.Groups so dont know how it works.
Anyway, anyone know about map replacement and when the system of
protection changed? Just interest in passing! C+

I have had a nuvi 65LMT for about 6 years now. I had a lot of trouble
with the unit about a year after I got it -- the mini USB port failed.
They sent me a new one and allowed me to transfer the maps. In
about a year the replacement failed. By this time, I had a map of
Western Europe as well. When I contacted them, they agreed to
replace (the replacement!) with a refab. Again, as things were
within the warranty period, I was given the keys to move the
maps to the new device. That one, has worked fine till now.

So, I think that the idea of tying the maps to a particular device
seems to have originated about 6 years ago.

I am fearing the days wihen the current unit goes AWOL! Of
course, I could do with a map upgrade, but the old maps still
work fine in Europe (at least for my purposes).

I do wish that they would allow one to move maps when you
buy a new unit directly from them ....

Forgot one other thing. Each time Garmin fixed or exchanged my
malfunctioning devices, the clock on the maps was reset! So, I
got updated maps for a couple of years :-)
